We're planning on getting our 18 month old Yorkie spayed soon, do we need to get her pre-op blood tests?

Heard before that you can get your dog pre-op blood tests which check to make sure she doesn't have problems which might make an operation unwise? Has anyone ever gotten these tests done for their dog prior to being spayed? What do the blood tests look for do you know? Thanks.
